2016 International Entrant - Focus On Ability Short FIlm Festival.

DANCE is a short film about Amy, a young girl who studies dance for many years, shows great potential, is accepted into New York's High School for Performing Arts, dances professionally with the Alvin Ailey Workshop, and then is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The film focuses on how she resumes a professional dance career even after the diagnosis.

During the opening of the film I include two pictures of Amy dancing. In one she is alone, in the other she dances with a partner. The song, I Hope You Dance, performed by Lee Ann Womack, plays through the opening credits. I then cut to Amy’s Manhattan apartment and, from off-screen, I interview Amy who is seated in her motorized wheelchair. I ask her about her experience with MS and with dance.

Amy then beautifully demonstrates the way she now engages in dance, through wheelchair ballet. I close by sharing a poignant quote from It’s All Part of the Dance: Finding Joy and Meaning in an Upside Down World, a book by Alan Gettis, Ph. D. During closing credits, I Hope You Dance is once again heard and there is a still photo of Amy performing in her motorized chair.
