Joint replacement surgeries are among the most common surgical procedures in the United States. Recent research finds that more than 7 million Americans, or 2 in every 100, are living with an artificial joint. During joint replacement surgery, an orthopaedic surgeon removes the damaged or diseased joint and replaces it with a prosthetic with the goal of bringing pain relief, increased mobility and an overall improvement in the patient's functional abilities. In our latest "Hot Topics" video, Northwestern Medicine orthopaedic surgeon Matthew Beal, MD, discusses the conditions that may lead to joint replacement surgery, non-surgical options for joint pain, and what patients can expect when having a joint replaced.
