Yes, spring has started! And you’re not the only one who’s noticed. So has the European toad (Bufo bufo).
Toads are very child-friendly fellows that are all-too-often mistaken for a frog. A frog is the quicker jumper (and swimmer) – a toad often takes its time, hopping, sometimes even walking. They’re Zen. Sometimes common toads travel considerable distances though, from their frost-sheltered wintering hide-outs, gathering en masse in very specific pools. Yes, toads are picky. Frogs too by the way. You often find them picking the same pools.
Unlike frogs, who lay their eggs in clumps, toads lay strings of eggs, decorating the water, where others still mate. And if spring progresses, in a couple of weeks time, these waters will be teaming with tadpoles.
Yes! We’ll give you an update then!
(We also spotted a snake, so a thrilling future awaits the little ones...)
