There has been a huge surge in people taking second jobs as cabbies in the last decade, figures show. One in 100 people now drive a minicab or taxi – meaning about 362,000 of us chauffeur others about. The stats show that we are taking a leaf out of Corrie cabbie Steve McDonald’s book with a 50% leap in taxi licences since the mid-2000s. Experts believe the trend has been sparked by demand for drivers from taxi hailing apps such as Uber – which allows them to log on whenever they like. But the number of people with taxi-only licences plunged by 7.1 per cent in England last year, meaning more people than ever use their own cars as cabs. The figures from the Department for Transport reveal that the amount of minicab or taxi driver licences in England at the end of March has risen by 0.4% in 12 months and 49.8% since 2005. But some fear that the explosion of cheap taxi services has left all types of cabbies out of pocket. Steve McNamara, from the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, fumed: “The number of private hire vehicles is a major problem. “Most of the drivers are earning less than the minimum wage and having to work extraordinarily long hours to keep the wolf from the door.”
